FReQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

+ Do you accept insurance?

As with so many aspects of life you get what you pay for. Opening Resilient as an out-of-network (cash pay) business was my way of making sure I continue to be able to increase my standard of care while avoiding burn out.

The investment you are making in your own healthcare is reflected in the investment I make each year to increase the depth and diversity of my skills. I make time to attend courses each year that are typically $700-$1000+ each not including travel and accommodations, and I engage regularly in study sessions and exploration with like-minded healthcare professionals to integrate all kinds of approaches to bring back to you at the clinic.

Insurance companies do not recognize, or reward different quality levels of physical therapy and their reimbursement levels for physical therapy in Colorado are very low. It quickly becomes untenable for a business to remain open at the rates they pay without compromising on quality or length of sessions. This can mean that you will spend part of your time alone on exercise equipment or with an aide (hello, stationary bike) or it might even mean that your provider’s attention is divided among several patients. Not only that, but insurance companies often restrict treatment to one body part, enforce arbitrary visit limits, or flat out deny certain codes regardless of the input of the person’s doctor, physical therapist, surgeon etc. It is unacceptable to me to feel like I cannot provide a patient with the treatment they need based on my trained professional opinion and that of their healthcare team, but it is common in the insurance based world. In prior jobs I have had, a full schedule could entail me seeing 16- 18 patients per day. No matter my good intentions, it felt unsustainable to see so many patients and still feel that I was giving each person the quality of treatment I knew I was capable of.

I started Resilient to reject those restrictions and enable me to do the job that I love and am inspired by, and I am thankful and proud of my clients who are also wiling to prioritize holistic healthcare.

+ Can I still get reimbursed by my insurance company?

If you have out-of-network benefits with your insurance company, I am happy to supply you with all the necessary documentation you would need (called a superbill) to submit for reimbursement. Most insurance companies have a claim form available on their website and guidelines for submission. However, please note that not all insurance plans include out-of-network benefits. If they do, your reimbursement will vary depending upon your specific level of coverage. For example, they may cover only a percentage of the charged amount (60%, 80% and 90% are common amounts) and you must have met your out-of-network deductible which is different from your in-network deductible. You should contact your company and confirm your coverage and requirements beforehand if you are expecting to get reimbursed. You may also wish to check if your company requires a pre-authorization for coverage which may include a referral from your doctor, or they will deny your claim.

Please note: Resilient Physical Therapy LLC is not a Medicare provider. Patients who have insurance through Medicare as their primary or secondary insurance are not able to file a claim. I am happy to walk you through the intricacies of why/how they restrict this access if you have further questions.

+ What types of payment do you accept – can I use my flex account or HSA?

Payment is accepted via credit card through my secure medical records system, and you can change or update your credit card at any time if you choose this method. If your FSA or HSA card is affiliated with a major credit card I can accept it in the same manner. I also accept Venmo/Paypal, cash, or check.

+ Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No. Colorado is a Direct Access state, meaning that patients who need physical therapy services can go directly to their Physical Therapist without having to wait to receive a prescription or referral from their physician. *

*However, some insurance companies do still require a doctor’s referral for some plans so if you are planning to submit for reimbursement, please confirm with them whether your plan requires this before treatment, or they may deny your claim.

+ What types of conditions or diagnoses do you treat?

Resilient Physical Therapy takes clients with a huge range of injuries and conditions in all parts of the body. This can include acute injuries that just happened (e.g. ankle sprain), older chronic conditions or nagging issues that never quite resolve (‘I always have sore calves when I run’, ‘my neck has hurt off and on since 1983’), but also those who do not have a specific pain or injury but know that there is something holding them back in their chosen sport, work or recreation activity.

You are more than the sum of your parts and I love the investigative work that helps find the true cause of your pain or less-than-optimal function and this can include many things such as a childhood injury or surgery, a concussion, or maybe even a visceral issue like chronic heartburn or fibroids or an appendectomy years ago that could be contributing to your nagging shoulder, hip, or back pain.

If you are not sure if physical therapy can help you, please contact me and see! I’m happy to speak with you for a short phone consultation to get a better sense of the situation and give you my honest opinion.

+ What should I do to prepare for my first appointment?

Wear or bring loose, comfortable clothing (e.g. not tight leggings, jeans, long sleeves)

  • It is best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows movement and allows me access to the areas of your current complaints (e.g., NOT tight leggings, long sleeves). You may bring this clothing with you to change into at the time of your appointment. The easier it is to access the affected area, the better I can assess and care for you and get to the root of what may be causing your current condition.

Fill out your Intake forms including health history PRIOR to your appointment

  • Your evaluation will begin with a thorough medical history, this includes older injuries anywhere not just the limb or area of concern. I will also ask about surgeries anywhere in the body and other health conditions. There is no such thing as too much information for me, I will ask a lot of questions and want in-depth answers so gathering this information before your evaluation session including filling out your initial paperwork allows you to spend appropriate time on it.

  • Often injuries or issues originate in movement patterns that might not seem clearly related to your current complaint so if in doubt, tell me about it! (For example: a rock climber with an old ankle fracture years ago causing poor mobility not allowing them to use their leg as a primary pushing source and getting an overuse injury in their arm).

Bring relevant documentation with you

  • Old MRI or Xray reports, doctors' prescriptions, and a list of medications are also items you might consider if you have them. There is also an area for medications in the intake form, and if you have many it is always a good idea to have a list with you including dosages for any provider.

The history will be followed by a comprehensive physical examination, hands-on treatment, and home exercise prescription

  • The evaluation and treatment will last 60-75 minutes, depending on complexity. Subsequent follow up sessions are 60 minutes.

+ What is your cancellation policy?

Resilient Physical Therapy has a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. Appointments cancelled less than 24 hours prior to the scheduled time will be charged a cancellation fee of $50. I understand that things come up in life, this policy is not intended to be punitive, but to respect the time and effort made to prepare for your session, the opportunities declined to make space for your session, and the hole created in my day that might have gone to another client seeking care. Patients who no-show without any notice will be responsible for the full session fee.

The best way to change or cancel an appointment is through your profile on my online booking site. If you must late cancel within 24 hours of your appointment call or text (720) 727 7868 me at, or email info@resilientptllc.com.

+ How often will I need to come?

Frequency of visits will be determined based on our evaluation, findings, and your goals. I almost always suggest that a brand-new client come once a week for 3-4 weeks because I have found that, early on, regularity of care is very important to help us get a baseline for your system and to understand how you react to treatments.

Your feedback from the first session or two gives me a lot of information about how you will respond to different treatments and helps zero in on main patterns or dysfunctions as well as building up a few things you can do independently to begin to take control of your own symptoms and maintain the changes we make between sessions. After that, the frequency becomes much more dependent on what is still lingering, your activity levels, and your life demands and goals. We will work together and communicate to develop a plan of care that works for you and reflects your healing process and goals.

I do have some patients who continue to see me on a more infrequent maintenance basis once their initial issue has resolved to be able to maintain a more intensive activity or just because they feel it helps them stay as active or mobile as they want to be. They often say to me that it is more effective for them than, say, a massage to feel improved and this is fine, but I do not typically find it sufficient for someone in a more acute phase of injury or with a more pronounced performance problem that is limiting them. .

+ What are your Covid precautions or procedures?

I am fully vaccinated, boosted, and continue to observe recommended precautions as published by CDC and relevant authorities for Boulder County. When a mandate is in place, all parties will wear masks for the duration of sessions without exception. When there is not a mandate in place, mask usage is optional. I know that each person has a variety of factors and risks that they navigate and so I am happy to wear an N95 or KN95 mask if you would prefer. Please do not hesitate to ask. There is always hand sanitizer available for use in the treatment room and I run a HEPA air filter continuously during the workday. All surfaces and equipment used during a session are cleaned and linens changed between each client.
